Battle of the Books

Purpose: The purpose of Battle of the Books club is to introduce students to a variety of new authors and genres that they may not have been familiar with. The club aims to create or reignite a passion for reading in students through engaging and relevant titles. In the spring, the students will attend a competition against other local high schools to showcase their comprehension skills and try to win the top prize!
Criteria: Read a minimum of 5 books from the Battle of the Books list before March 1st, Memorize the 16 book titles and authors, Attend monthly after school meetings.
DECA (Business & Marketing)

Purpose: The purpose of DECA is to prepare students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management by providing hands-on experience in business, marketing, and entrepreneurship; Developing skills and competence for marketing careers; Building self-esteem; Experiencing leadership; Practicing community service; Advocating for marketing education; Growing business and education partnerships.
Criteria: Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, staff member recommendation and consistent attendance.
eSports Gaming Club

Purpose: The purpose of the eSports Club is to allow students to participate in various gaming events without competing at the varsity level. Some of the games include: Apex, Rocket League, Halo, Brawlhalla, Valorant, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Chess, Minecraft, Mario Kart, Rainbow Six Siege, Splatoon 3, and more!
Criteria: Consistent attendance and staff recommendation.
Varsity eSports Gaming

Purpose: The purpose of the Varsity eSports Gaming Team is to allow students to compete against other high school students in various online gaming battles and tournaments. Students will compete in various gaming events including: Apex, Rocket League, Halo, Brawlhalla, Valorant, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Chess, Minecraft, Mario Kart, Rainbow Six Siege, Splatoon 3, and more!
Criteria: Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, staff member recommendation and students must maintain the same eligibility requirements as student athletes (attendance, passing grades, etc.)
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

Purpose: North Carolina Future Business Leaders of America (NC FBLA) is a career and technical student organization that serves students who are or have been enrolled in a Business Education course. NC FBLA is affiliated with FBLA-PBL, which is a national organization with 250,000 student members and 56 affiliate state organizations.
The mission of NC FBLA is to help build and sustain Business Education programs of excellence in order to serve our communities, state, and nation. NC FBLA is an integral part of North Carolina’s Business Education Program, which serves over 280,000 students. It provides students with leadership opportunities as well as a means to compete with other students in regional, state, and national conferences.
There are approximately 6,600 middle and high school student members in NC FBLA. Student members have the opportunity to attend leadership training workshops, as well as regional, state, and national conferences. Through participation in competitive events, students have opportunities for recognition. Members also have access to scholarship programs and the Vocational Education Honor Society.
NC FBLA helps prepare students pursuing job opportunities in business technologies career pathways including: accounting and finance, information systems, business management and applications, small business entrepreneurship, business administration, and office systems technology.
Criteria: Cumulative GPA of 2.0
Meeting Days: Every Second Wednesday @ 3:45 - 4:30 pm in Room 311, unless otherwise indicated.
Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)

Purpose: Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life including: planning, goal-setting, problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal communication; all necessary within the home and workplace. FCCLA is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only Career and Technical in-school Student Organization with family as its central focus.
Criteria: Any student who has taken a FACs class can join.
Key Club
Sponsor: Ms. Thea Kraljevic Email Ms. Thea Kraljevic
Purpose: Key Club International is a student-led organization that aims to prepare high school students for citizenship by developing their leadership and service skills. Key Club members perform service projects in their schools, communities, and homes, such as building bridges, collecting food, and helping to eliminate diseases all to improve their citizenship skills, while also helping those in their community. Members build character by developing values such as caring, inclusiveness, and leadership.
Criteria: Maintain a 2.0 GPA, consistent attendance to meetings
DBHS Regiment Marching Band

Purpose: The Douglas Byrd Regiment is an award-winning performing ensemble, that uses music to educate and entertain. The DBHS marching band performs and competes at the local, state and national levels (Bands of America). We focus on teaching our students that with hard work, leadership, and dedication, anything is achievable.
Criteria: Marching Band is open to all students at Douglas Byrd High School. Middle school band is required for all students who are wind and percussion players. The Drill Team for the marching band is determined through auditions. Physicals are required and members must maintain all the same eligibility requirements as athletes (attendance, passing grades, etc.)
National Honor Society (NHS)

Purpose: The National Honor Society is a nationally affiliated organization established in 1921 for outstanding and distinguished high school students. Each chapter within the organization, as recognized by the National Council, establishes its rules for membership based on a student’s outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four components are the foundation of the organization.
NHS members are student role models. Members strive in every way, by word and deed, to make their ideas, the ideals of the school and those whom they influence on a daily basis. Our students pledge to endeavor intelligently and courageously, in order to advocate lifelong learning and leadership principles within their communities. National Honor Society members aim high for scholastic aptitude with a desire for mastery of skill and achievement. They are the leaders and trailblazers of Douglas Byrd High School.
Criteria: Membership is by invitation only. Only students with a minimum 3.65 weighted GPA and minimal attendance issues will receive an invitation.
Meeting Days: NHS Seniors meet on the 1st Thursday of the month. NHS Juniors meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month in Room 206 immediately after school.
National Technical Honor Society (NTHS)

Purpose: The NTHS has several core objectives, including: career development, leadership development, service, and recognition. It aims to Recognize and honor students and teachers in Career & Technical Education (CTE); Promote educational excellence; Award scholarships; Enhance career opportunities for members; Prepare students for the competitive labor market; Connect education and industry to build a skilled workforce ; Advocate for students to pursue skills needed for their careers.
Criteria: Maintain a 2.5 GPA and participate in CTE courses
Robotics

Purpose: Douglas Byrd High School is the first high school in Cumberland county to participate in the NC FIRST Robotics Challenge. The purpose of this program is to inspire young people to become leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through a mentor-based program. Students develop communication, leadership, and self-confidence skills during their build sessions with other students. The end result is an industrial sized robot that is designed, built, wired, programmed, and marketed entirely by students.
Criteria: Maintain a 2.0 GPA and regularly attend meetings
JROTC

Purpose: The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) is a program that aims to teach high school students the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. JROTC teaches students leadership, teamwork, and self-discipline and is a great way to gain relevant experience for students interested in careers in the military. JROTC programs combine classroom experiences with service to students' schools and communities.
Criteria: Maintain a 2.0 GPA and have been enrolled in a JROTC class period
Speech & Debate
Sponsor: Mr. Terrance Rose Email Mr. Terrance Rose
Purpose: The Speech and Debate team is an academic extracurricular club focusing on performance based competitions around eastern North Carolina. Students will select either Speech (interpretative events designed to be comical or dramatic) or Debate (argumentative performances on real world issues). The season lasts from September to April. Practices are after school in Room 205 every Wednesday and all students are invited regardless of experience as long as they work hard. Criteria: Maintain a 2.5 GPA, consistent attendance to weekly meetings
Meeting Days: Every Wednesday in room 205 from September through April
Student Government Association (SGA)
Sponsor: Ms. Dee Myers Email Ms. Dee Myers
Purpose: To represent and encourage cooperation among the student body and to provide a means for student opinions and ideas to be expressed to the faculty and administration of DBHS. The Student Government is the representative of and an advisory committee to the student body of DBHS. SGA students assist with event planning for the staff and students of DBHS.
Criteria: To run for an SGA office, students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must have teacher and student recommendations.
S2S (Student to Student peer counseling)

Purpose: Student 2 Student (S2S ) is a peer-to-peer student-led program that brings military and civilian students together to welcome new students, create a positive environment for all, support educational opportunities, build connections through service, and ease transitions. Students make a positive impact on their school and community using the S2S six core values: Leadership, Academics, Service, Climate and Culture, Relationships, and 100% Acceptance.
Criteria: Maintain a 2.5 GPA and have a teacher recommendation
