The Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Program at Fayetteville State University is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of UBMS is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in fields in math and science and to encourage them to pursue post-secondary degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. Upward Bound Math & Science is now accepting applications for student enrollment into the program. Students must be currently enrolled in the 9th & 10th grade and attend the following schools in Cumberland and Robeson County to be eligible for the program: Douglas Byrd High School, Westover High School, and South View High School.


  • 5 GPA or higher( A’s & B’s for 9thgraders without GPA)
  • Low Income or First generation (or both)
  • Interest in a STEM major/career
  • Desire to go to college

FREE Services Offered
Academic instruction in math, research, English and science at Saturday Academy
Tutorial services
Exposure to a variety of colleges and universities
Mentoring programs
Workshops on study skills, math anxiety, note taking and test taking skills
Exposure to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers
Assistance in completing college admissions and financial aid applications
Assistance in preparing for the SAT/ACT and/or PSAT/PLAN
Six-week summer research program

The Office of College Access Programs’ mission is to encourage and assist youth who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education with preparation for, entry into, and completion of a post-secondary education. The Office of College Access Programs is comprised of federally funded programs that include Talent Search, Upward Bound (Classic), Upward Bound Math & Science, AmeriCorps VISTA and 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The office provides college preparatory services to students, parents, and educators in Cumberland, Hoke, and Robeson Counties.
